Vacation Vinyl will be opening an hour early at 10AM, and will close at our usual time of 9PM on Record Store Day this year. We have teamed up with a few labels to do some special giveaways while you're shopping, and we have some in-store DJs playing great music later in the day. Check the Vacation Vinyl Blog for updates on the RSD releases we are stocking this year!
Botch An Anthology of Dead Ends 12" The final will and testament of Seattle's best boy band ever, released just in time for the 10th anniversary of their final show. A collection so vital its grown 2 inches in 10 years. 180g vinyl on multiple colors. Full color old-school style tip-on single LP jacket, with heavyweight full color innersleeve.
Circle Manner LP Finland's indomitable Circle return with a dilating dose of NWOFHM/Avant-AOR. Limited vinyl album. 6 songs. 40 minutes. Their first on Hydra Head. Housed in a classic full color die-cut DJ sleeve, the cover image of the eye is not fully realized until the record is inserted into the jacket with the LP label completing the iris. The vinyl colors equally match the aesthetic; we would tell you what they are, but we don't want to ruin the surprise.
Pelican Australasia 2xLP The instru-metal rock masterpiece that came to define a genre. Often imitated, never duplicated. Deluxe vinyl edition available for the first time on Hydra Head since the album's 2003 release. 180g double vinyl on multiple colors. Full color tip-on gatefold with full color innersleeve. This thing is so heavy you could probably hammer nails with it. Hint: track down the 'haze' vinyl color...we like. GIVEAWAYS:
We have great give-away packs from a few labels we are friendly with including stuff from Sub Pop, Kill Shaman and from our good (best?) friends at Hydra Head. We will have free posters, signed prints, pins and patches. Special items also include full sized uncut and signed (by album artwork designer, Aaron Turner) production print sheets for Pelican 'Australasia' and Botch 'An Anthology of Dead Ends' that will be available for the first 20 customers of each album on Saturday morning
We will also have copies of Holy Ghost covering Ministry's classic "I Wanted To Tell Her" to give away thanks to Green Label Sound and DFA.AWESOME DJs WHILE YOU SHOP:
2-4pm will have DJ Mahssa representing Finders Keepers and B-Music! 4-6pm will have DJs curated by Complicated Dance Steps!

Emerald Cocoon presents TRAPDOOR FUCKING EXIT, a series of performances taking place inside Helga Fassonaki's Installation, Touching Them Touching Me - A Love Song for the Dead C at Human Resources gallery April 20 - 22, 2012.
Address: 410 Cottage Home St in Chinatown, 90012
$10 each night
Friday April 20th, 7PM
TOM CARTER – Pete Swanson once described him to me as a ‘wizard’ and I think he might be right. His last solo set in LA was one of the most life-affirming demonstrations of the term ‘slow-burn’ that I have ever seen. And you weren’t there. Please use this opportunity to correct yourself.
BRIAN CROOK (NZ) – guitarist/vocalist from The Renderers/The Terminals/Flies Inside The Sun/The Max Block/Scorched Earth Policy etc etc etc. If these names mean nothing to you then you may as well stay at home. Hand down New Zealands best guitarist. Ask anyone.
GLANDS OF EXTERNAL SECRETION – reclusive legends Barbara Manning and Seymour Glass in their first LA performance (5th performance in 17 years!). In 1996 they released a ‘no instruments’ cover of ‘Tubular Bells’. We have no idea what is going to happen.
QUEEN VICTORIA – “I’m basically only interested in acoustic noise now” – Nick Malkin aka Queen Victoria
YEK KOO – Helga will perform the whole of her new ‘Love Song for the Dead C’ LP in it’s entirety for the first time.
* plus a performance in absentia by ADAM WILLETTS (NZ) - Adam delivers a mailed-in dose of his non-denominational acid electronics from Christchurch.
Saturday April 21st, 7PM
CHARALAMBIDES – Forget obscure psych-folk reissue ‘gems’ hitting the shelves daily, you don’t have to look back to the pre-corporate takeover era to find modern psychedelic music of rare beauty. Tom and Christina Carter are perhaps the greatest living practitioners of the form in America. Having been through various configurations and conceptual approaches from avant-folk, through minimalist improvisation right out the other side into folk-form again over a period of 21 years they have consistently chosen the path less trodden, leaving behind them a body of work as monumental as that of Keiji Haino or The Dead C. Don’t get left behind in the wake of cheap party music and illusionary careerist cash dreams: there are visionaries in our midst.
500 MG – Michael Gibbons of psych warriors Bardo Pond performs in his 500mg guise for the first time in LA. Twisting/burning psilocybe mantras.
PURPLE PILGRIMS (NZ) – Sister duo from Christchurch, fog shrouded choral vox coated with distant reverb guitar. Immersive.
PETER KOLOVOS – Thin Wrist Recordings proprietor plays electric guitar like fireworks built out of stained glass.
GABIE STRONG – Local artist and bassist of Lady Noise. No-one knows what to expect - bass?
UN CIEGO – Plans to one day release something that isn’t a lathe-cut. Perhaps a one sided c20 in an edition of 5?
Sunday April 22nd, 6PM
MARYROSE CROOK (NZ) – Of The Renderers/The Max Block/Above Ground (whose sole cassette was recently reissued by Siltbreeze). Aching loose country psych ballads from one of the godmothers of the NZ underground.
LA LAKERS (NZ) - New Zealand facsimile of LA basketball team slam dunks improvised tape compositions.
METAL ROUGE – First LA show in a few months and probably the last for a few more. New material. Less interested than ever in ‘entertaining’ you.
DEREK ROGERS – Recent Texas transplant with a million tapes on a million labels everywhere. Laminal.
BAILOUTS – First performance from new duo unit made up of members of The Faraday Trippers and Shelter Death. Something’s brewing in the OC and it’s not just kopi luwak.
*plus a non-appearance performance by BILL ORCUTT – Bill unfortunately couldn’t be with us in person because he’s on tour, BUT he did give us an exclusive new work to premiere. New cubist blues, with no interest in your opinion.

ANCESTORS Monday, April 2nd, @ 8pm"In Dreams and Time" on Tee Pee record releasefree in-store performance

Los Angeles psychedelic prog-rock band ANCESTORS return with a strong sense of purpose and a captivating new album, In Dreams And Time. The quintet formed in 2006 and instead of “choosing between prog rock or heavy rock,” merged the styles to create music rife with atmosphere, tension and raw human emotion. On In Dreams And Time, ANCESTORS fuse the primal aggression of their earlier work with the advanced dynamic sensibilities of the new, gazing into the infinite horizon to provide innovative, atmospheric thinking-man's music. From the moment the album's lead track "Whispers" comes on like a collapsing star, SoCal's reigning kings of heavy psych unleash spacious yet pulverizing music that unveils layer upon layer of vintage tones, spectral atmospheres, skin-crawling ambience and swirling keyboard swell over a body of crushing, full-contact rock. A record of limitless depth, In Dreams And Time swings from the exceedingly beautiful to the punishingly physical in seconds flat. Towering riffs. Bleak beauty. Deep wells of light and dark. In Dreams And Time is ANCESTORS' most accomplished music yet!
The album isn't officially out until April 10th, but Vacation Vinyl will have copies available for this special event.
PETE MAJORS on KEITH MORRIS' TOTALLY PSYCHED!TUESDAY, APRIL 3rd 3-5PM on MOHEAK RADIO

Formerly of Black Flag & The Circle Jerks, Keith is once again on the rise with his new band, OFF! From past shows during the punk rock era, to performing at LA’s FYFestival, the man has truly seen and done it all. Now, with a heavy load finally put to rest, Keith Morris sits down for an intimate, strictly vinyl radio show. Totally Psyched with Keith Morris broadcasts every Tuesday at 3PM Pacific Time.
Tuesday, April 3rd from 3PM-5PM PST, Keith will be joined by Vacation's own Pete Majors to both play and discuss records. This is your chance to hear some of the great stuff we have in the shop and some of Pete's favorites.

ÆGES March 30th, @ 8pm "The Bridge" on The Mylene Sheath record release free in-store performance
With the decline of Western civilization comes a new pilgrimage of musicians looking to carve out their fates from the wreckage of the past. ÆGES are the new breed of California’s creative drifters. ÆGES was founded by Chicago-raised Larry Herweg (Pelican, San Angelus), former Seattleite Mark Holcomb (Undertow, Shift, San Angelus), multi-continent Kemble Walters (The Rise, The Blank Faces, Juliet…te and the Licks), and the sole California native Tony Baumeister (16, Cutthroats 9).
Converging in Southern California across state lines and international waters, ÆGES use their world-wise musical expertise to rebuild the archetype of the heavy rock band. There’s a definite element of desert rock in ÆGES sound—the low-tuned guitars, the sludgy sun-baked riffs, the deceptive pop hook buried in the molasses-thick instrumentation. Yet the diverse backgrounds of the band members create a unique blend of perspectives and a resultantly fresh sound. The common sonic thread between the four individuals in ÆGES—their tenure in bands that explored the darker side of hardcore—manifests itself in the aggressive tonalities of their sound. But their divergent paths, both geographical and musical, broadened the emotional palette beyond the angst of their earlier bands. Their debut full length, “The Bridge”, is set for release via The Mylene Sheath (Caspian, Junius, Constants) on April 17th, 2012. The album was produced and engineered by the bands own Kemble Walters at The Canshaker Studio in Malibu, CA, and mastered by Mark Chalecki at Little Red Book Mastering (Omar Rodriguez Lopez, Goatsnake, Megadeth).
The new millennium ushered in a new, revitalized era of artistic integrity for LA. We saw it in the age of the acid-hazed ‘60s, the age of the nihilistic Regan-era punks, and the current age of abandoned archetypes of a failed economy. It’s creative optimism in a time of hopelessness. It’s the music of ÆGES. -Brian Cook

NEW CASSETTES ON COMPLICATED DANCE STEPS
Ryan McGregor's Orange Confusion - Leaping Off and On
Virtuosic guitar player Ryan McGregor's first cassette release, Leaping Off and On, is a cathartic experimental work. He contorts his guitar's voice to tell soundscape stories of an arduous past and an optimistic future, and it features guest musician Robert Findlater (ex-Young Hunting). The artist himself drew the cover and cassette shell art.

Keepbullfighting - It Never Ends
The prolific LA-based Keepbullfighting (aka Al Heath) creates electronic music rich with curiosity and depth. It Never Ends is his debut cassette, and like his entertaining live show, it's addictive and infused with his melodic touch. The tape was produced by Leaving Records' Matthewdavid and features art by Celeste Byers.

MONDAY MARCH 26th @ 8pm MASTER MUSICIANS OF BUKKAKE free in-store performance

Siphoned from flying graveyards and fed through giant funnels of navigatory spirits to the haunted outskirts of behavior and all of its rickety platforms, an intuitive, much weirder America is on the rise. One formed from necessity and adaptation. One that won't give up their guns or their souls to the agencies trained to occupy them. Those who can communicate outside of language and direct energy on the inside are the only valid resistance to the creeping tumors of controlled humanity.
MMOB speed now solidified Into a seven piece cosmic psyche force. Like a reverse Dark Side of the New Age sound, on-the Totem series Master Musicians of Bukkake performer ritualistic electric excursions Into the outer and inner reach. Relying more on the electric power of Psyched guitars, analog synth chants, and exotic heavy percussion. Totem one modify "With The Delusions of a West Coast Death cult. Outer spaced Gamelan, dusty fuzz rock from celestial deserts, the meditation of a Deranged Krishna Gathering, And The Blurry acoustic guitar Majesty of the Cascade Mountains all Reveal Themselves here in epic form Totem On One. Every sound and note Played put to tape by a group with a singular purpose purging.
They'll be fresh off a performance at the 1st Annual LA Psych Fest and performing a free show in our store for your listening pleasure!
Better late than never! Our friend Jason Solomon recorded this video at the OFF! 4x7" boxset release party at Vacation Vinyl way back when on December 14, 2010.

SPLIT CRANIUM - S/T LP
Live fast, die young and leave a good-looking corpse? How about play fast, die old and leave the next round of stiffs wondering what the shit their crusty old grandpop was up to back in the economically vibrant 20-teens when liquid gold flowed down from Finland’s Kemi River and crisp American sawbucks grew on trees? If Split Cranium had a manifesto—which they don’t—they might at least consider endorsing that one, whatever it was, before giving us all the finger and getting on with it.
“It” being a highly satisfying blitzkrieg of Finnish/Amero punk perpetrated by Jussi Lehtisalo (Circle, Pharaoh Overlord), Jukka Kröger, Samae Koskinen (Steel Mammoth) and Aaron Turner (Mamiffer/ex-ISIS), a token American brought in to soften potential US resistance to the Finns’ brash mastery of almost every style of rock worth mastering. Of course, it’s no coincidence that Mr. Turner is also not exactly a fucking slouch in the vocal department, lending his patented monastic chants and feral roars to the band’s stomp n’ burn riffola and death-defying d-beats.
Available Saturday, March 10th at 11am in the limited to 100 Vacation-exclusive CLEAR vinyl, as well as SIMPLE GREEN and BLACK wax. All copies from Vacation come with a poster and screenprinted patches for CIRCLE, SPLIT CRANIUM and HYDRA HEAD RECORDS.

IDES OF GEMINIfree in-store record release performance MONDAY, FEB 20th @ 8PM
Ides Of Gemini will be playing a free show at Vacation Vinyl in Los Angeles on Monday, February 20th, to celebrate the release of our split 12-inch with Vermapyre via Magic Bullet Records.
"Sera Timms’ voice is a national treasure. It’s a reverb-soaked choir of 4AD ghosts floating over scratchy guitars. Burzum scoring a spaghetti western. This stuff gives me chills."
—Cosmo Lee of Decibel magazine on IDES OF GEMINI
IDES OF GEMINI is a collusion of musical forces precipitated by the haunting and
inimitable vocal prowess of singer/bassist Sera Timms, also of Los Angeles dark-psych
alchemists BLACK MATH HORSEMAN. The compositions are the long-simmering
mental fallout of veteran music and film journalist J. Bennett (guitar/backing vocals),
who has spent most of the last 14 years writing for such publications as Decibel,
Terrorizer, Revolver, Alternative Press and Thrasher. The third and final corner of the
triangle is Kelly Johnston, whose martial drumming techniques and soaring backing
vocals literally brought IDES OF GEMINI to life as a performing entity.
Last year, Timms and Bennett recorded and self-released IDES OF GEMINI’s four-song
EP, The Disruption Writ, which was anointed “My Favorite Demo of 2010” by the highly
influential music blog Invisible Oranges. Lyrically, the songs detailed the terrifying
permanence of dismemberment in all its unsettling forms: psychological, emotional
and physical. Musically, though? Someone on the Internet called it “dream doom.”
Nobody likes to be pigeonholed, but IDES OF GEMINI will gladly take up temporary
residence in that particular nook for the sake of shorthand. Which is to say that “dream
doom” will do the trick for now. And now is nothing if not fleeting. Mostly because
IDES OF GEMINI are about to unveil their full-length debut, Constantinople, via Neurot
Recordings, the label owned & operated by members of the legendary NEUROSIS.
